Application to Attend

Island Health’s 2019 premier Hackathon is a fun, intense 24-hour event where staff, patients, physicians, industry experts, designers, and students compete against the clock and each other to solve our most challenging health problems. Guided by the principles of courageous innovation, strong partnerships, excellence, and the belief that we are better together, Island Health provides teams with space, guidance, and tools to pitch their wicked health care problems and prototype solutions. Winners will receive prizes and opportunities to further develop their solution concepts.

CODE HACK SCHEDULE

Code Hack runs March 8-10, 2019 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital campus in Victoria, BC.

Friday, March 8
Join us in the evening for the official launch of Code Hack. You can also pick up your hacker package.

Saturday, March 9
Problem pitching starts bright and early, followed by team formation. Then Code Hack really begins! You’ll spend 24 hours sprinting toward a solution as part of a multi-disciplinary hacker team.

Sunday, March 10
Solution pitches in front of our judges where your team will showcase your innovative solution for the chance to win prizes. Winners will be announced at the award ceremony following judges’ deliberation.

HOW THIS WORKS

Step 1: Apply
Complete the form below to submit your application to become a Code Hack participant. Space is limited to 100 people so get your application in!

Step 2: Receive your acceptance
You’ll receive an e-mail letting you know that you’ve been accepted.

Step 3: Accept your spot
We’ll provide you with a link to our online platform where you can confirm your registration, make a profile, meet the other hackers, and share the problem you’re pitching.

Step 4: Vote
You’ll have three votes that you can use to up-vote problems. The top up-voted problems will be guaranteed a spot in the opening pitch session on March 9. The additional problems will be drawn wild-card style at Code Hack so be ready to pitch on the fly!

Never been to a hackathon before? Don’t worry! Code Hack is Island Health’s first hackathon and many people are new to this experience. You don’t need to be seasoned hackathon pro. All you need is you, your enthusiasm, and a desire to take action on some of our most challenging health care problems.

Or maybe you’re not sure how you’ll manage to attend. We recognize that not everyone in health care has a flexible schedule or weekends off. We encourage you to apply regardless of your work schedule or situation. If you’re accepted, we’ll work with you to help you get the support you need to attend.

If my application is successful, I confirm that:

1. I am able to attend in person, all three days of the Code Hack event, commencing the evening of Friday March 8, and concluding in the afternoon of Sunday March 10 (overnight attendance optional);

2. I agree to the following terms which will be included in a Participation Agreement to be signed on arrival at the event:

a) Intellectual property rights in each entry will remain the property of the Participant(s) who create it, but Participants will enter into a license agreement with Island Health;

b) to indemnify Island Health against all actual or alleged claims, liabilities, costs and damages as laid out in the Participation agreement;
